The Spartan Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning group under the direction of Alan Reno, known for its energetic performances, strong musicianship, and deep appreciation for the jazz tradition. This ensemble has been featured at high-profile events including Philadelphia 76ers games, performances for the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C., Media Dining Under the Stars, and the National Middle School Association.


This evening’s set showcases a wide range of classic and contemporary jazz styles. Their program opens with St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins, arranged by Mark Taylor, a Caribbean-influenced standard that highlights rhythmic drive and solo expression. Next, you’ll hear Things Ain’t What They Used to Be by Mercer Ellington, arranged by Rich Sigler, a blues-based swing classic steeped in the Ellington tradition. The set concludes with Birdland by Joe Zawinul, arranged by John Higgins, a jazz-fusion favorite made famous by Weather Report.


The Spartan Jazz Ensemble has also benefited from clinics and masterclasses with renowned jazz artists including Tony DeAngelis, Steve Perry, Chris Oatts, and John Blake.
